Learning Management Systems - A Comparions of Moodle and Desire2Learn
Welcome
As the lead evaluator for this Learning Management System and Quality Matters review, I would like to welcome you to the evaluation course page. I would like to personally thank you for your time, attention, and input on this extremely important issue. Finding an appropriate LMS and aligning courses to quality standard will help our students and instructors by providing a rewarding online learning experience.
LMS Recommendation
After comparing a variety of tools within D2L and Moodle, it is obvious each system has its strengths and weaknesses. D2L has a nice navigation system that can be customized to an instructors' needs, whereas Moodle has a simple breadcrumb trail as the only built-in navigation method. Both include online quiz features, assignment drop off areas, and the ability to do a wide variety to teaching and learning tasks. My final recommendation came down to the fact that, as an open source system, Moodle is much more customizable with many more plug-in options than D2L. Moodle allows an instructor to use the simple editing features or move into the more advanced creation tools.
Going this route will require that we host the system ourselves and that our IT department will need to attend training to learn the back-end portion of the system. Instructors will also need to be trained how to use Moodle, but from past experience, this will be a much simpler system for them to learn than the D2L system. Overall, I feel Moodle will have the flexibility that instructors will appreciate and students will be able to navigate without any problems.
Quality Matters Recommendation
After carefully reviewing all eight of the Quality Matters general standards and the 41 specific standards, I would highly recommend that we adopt all of these into our instructional design and course creation process. All of these standards should already be in place in a well developed online course, but the QM rubric is a nice guideline, or "checklist," so an instructor does not overlook items that need to be included to make the student online experience as rich as possible.
Quality Matters Certificate
This certificate represents successful completion of the Quality Matters Introductory Course. The course included background of how Quality Matters was developed, the standards for reviewing online courses, and how the review process works.
